Conjunctions are also called connectors.
They connect two sentences, two nouns, two parts of a sentence.
At A2 level in German, conjunctions are a very important training goal because they are a sentence structure, namely subordinate clauses and indirect interrogative sentences.
A subordinate clause always starts with a subordinate clause conjunction.
There is a comma between the main clause and the subordinate clause.
It is important that the conjugated verb in the subordinate clause is usually at the end of the sentence.
1. „Dass“ Conjunction: All verbs that require a sentence complement are intended for “dass-clauses”, for example: glauben, denken, meinen, schätzen, verstehen, vermuten etc.
Example:
– Meine Lieblingscousine glaubt, dass sie im früheren Leben eine Prinzessin gewesen wäre.
– Ein Kollege schätzt, dass wir in diesem Monat mehr Gewinn erzielen können.
– Alle wissen nicht, dass Frau Müller vor einem Tag in eine andere Stadt umgezogen ist.
2. Causal Conjunctions:The connector signals one’s explanation, clarification, or justification.
Example:
– Die alte Frau braucht einen Rollator zum Gehen, weil ihre Beine seit Jahren sehr schwach sind.
– Zumal es so lange geregnet hat, sind alle Straßen überflutet.
3. Temporal Conjunctions:In temporal subordinate clauses, the tenses in the sentence should be taken into account because the actions in the main and subordinate clauses do not always take place simultaneously.
Example:
– Während Herr Habeck musiziert, arbeitet seine Frau an ihrem Buch.
– Ich hatte einen Tee getrunken, bevor ich das Haus verlassen habe.
– Bis ich wieder zu Hause bin, möchte ich, dass das Haus wieder in Ordnung ist.
